The field mission conducted from July 23 to 26, 2024, under the UNDP-GEF Aral Wetlands Project, played a crucial role in strengthening cooperation between international experts, local institutions, and key government bodies. Through targeted consultations, site visits, and scientific analysis, the mission deepened the understanding of current water resource challenges in the Amudarya Delta and its impact on ecosystems and communities.
The discussions revealed a shared concern over reduced water availability, high levels of salinity in natural water bodies, and the urgent need for modern, sustainable water management strategies. Stakeholders expressed readiness to collaborate on hydroclimatic modeling, ecological flow assessments, and innovative practices, such as the reuse of drainage water for fishery development.
Importantly, the field assessments—particularly at the Akpetki lake system—confirmed the need for enhanced monitoring of water quantity and quality. Moving forward, the project will focus on developing data-driven solutions, improving stakeholder coordination, and supporting nature-based approaches to ecosystem restoration and sustainable livelihoods in the Aral Sea region.
This mission marked a significant step toward integrated water resource planning that aligns with national priorities and the broader goals of environmental resilience and land degradation neutrality.
