As part of the "Aral Wetlands" project, a joint initiative by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of Uzbekistan, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), a ceremonial transfer of 3,000 fruit tree seedlings was held for the "Muynak" State Forestry in the Muynak district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan.
The "Aral Wetlands" project, formally titled *“Conservation and Management of Lakes, Wetlands, and Coastal Corridors as the Basis for a Sustainable and Land Degradation-Neutral Landscape of the Aral Sea Basin Supporting Sustainable Livelihoods,”* focuses on strengthening ecosystem stability and local livelihoods. It aims to prevent land degradation through the integrated management of land and water resources in key areas of biodiversity and ecological significance.
The planting of fruit trees supports reforestation and greening efforts in the Aral Sea basin—a region that, despite the dramatic shrinking of the sea, still hosts vital wetlands and coastal ecosystems, particularly important for migratory bird species traveling between Europe, Africa, and Asia.
The new fruit orchards will contribute to restoring biodiversity, providing food sources for wildlife, and creating local employment opportunities, while also supporting sustainable agriculture and community resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
